Blend Validation - The Process

If you follow us on Instagram then you have probably seen some of our social posts and a process known as "validation". This process is more known as blend validation, where we check the consistency of the blend for a certain maraca and vitola. Below we will showcase and explain to you our process of blend validation as it related to La Hacienda Superiores.

Please remember that each manufacturer is different in their validation and the process goes much further in depth then shown, but this will give you a good base of exactly what is going on during the Warped validation process.

What are we looking for?

Today we will be validating La Hacienda Superiores, the 5 5/8 x 46 Nicaraguan puro compromised of 100% AGANORSA Corojo '99 and Criollo '98. So what exactly are we looking for? What you see in front of you are 3 Superiores (and 1 in my other hand, so a total of 4). Each cigar is from a different pair from the same production run that just entered our warehouse. We are validating these cigars from different pairs to ensure that the blend experience is the same from pair to pair and run to run. We also have a reference point from past runs that we keep on hand to compare against.

What do you use to keep your palate clean between cigars?

This is often a VERY personal thing, but in my experience I have heard the following...

  • Flat water
  • Espresso/coffee
  • Mineral water
  • Dark chocolate
  • Butter cookies
  • Milk
  • Alkaline water

For me, it is the below...

  • Espresso (usually pre first cigar)
  • Mineral water
  • Dark chocolate
  • Biscoff cookies

During the validation process, mineral water is used during the entire process, dark chocolate is used between 1/3's and the cookies...well sometimes you gotta get your snack on.

Let's Start:

We have officially started the validation process, with the inaugural lighting of the first cigar.

What Happens Now?

We will now begin smoking the first 1/3 of sample 1 and begin taking a series of notes in regards to the experience. Initial combustion, first draw, you know the typical aspects you look for in your cigar experience. We document each of these factors for not only the current validation but notes to apply against future validations as well.

So we are now a 1/3 of the way into our sample 1 of La Hacienda Superiores, what is next?

Now we will light another sample rolled by a different pair part of the same production run. This will allow us to make sure that the blend consistency and placement is the same experience as sample 1...

Okay, I lied...sometimes I go for espresso whenever it's in front of me.

Our newest team member Scott is to my left and I am explaining Warped's validation process as I am explaining it to you. As you can see sample 1 and 2 are lit and being smoked side by side for comparison. Notes are taken of sample 2 and compared against that of sample 1.

This process will continue for sample 3 and 4 and will be compared against sample 1 and 2.

The process continues.

Do you need an opinion?

To us its imperative that the blend is experienced the same whether by me or anyone on the Warped team. Their sample may be different then mine and we need to taste that to see if something is wrong. Often times we will cut the end and trade samples to ensure that everything is proper between my sample and theirs.

This is accomplished simply by taking a pair of scissors and cutting the mouth end. This is often done during the blending process as well. We all know the blend, and we all need to be in agreement over its consistency.

All in all validation from start to finish took around 2.5 hours. The below photo summarizes the end of our very quick example of blend validation.

We hope that this give you a little bit of education on the aspect of blend validation. We do this on a regular basis to ensure blend consistency across all of our brands and vitolas. Thank you for your suppprt!

Sky Flower: 2016

As we have mentioned previously, The Return of Sky Flower is the end of March 2016. So we have been getting some questions in regards to Sky Flower and its release, so we thought to take a few minutes and answer these questions for you so you can better prepare for The Return.

Background on Sky Flower:

Sky Flower is a extremely limited production variation of Flor del Valle utilizing the rare ligero priming known as medio tiempo. You may have heard of this material before as it is used in the Cohiba Behike and has become known for the incredibly unique flavor and aroma it gives. Medio Tiempo does not grow on all tobacco plants as its a random occurrence offshoot of the ligero priming.

These are small leaves and have to be picked out of the ligero harvest with tweezers (no, we are not kidding), its difficult to process and requires immense time and experience to properly process.

Sky Flower utilizes 100% Aganorsa leaf and is a Nicaraguan puro.

What is the box count?

Sky Flower is available in 10ct boxes only.

What size is Sky Flower?

5 5/8 x 48

How does it differ in flavor profile from Flor del Valle?

We get asked this quite a lot, and we always try to explain it, but you have to smoke it to understand.

Will you post up a list of retailers that are getting Sky Flower?

Yes, we will. But if you want first access to the list, you can subscribe to the Sky Flower email list below and get the information before we publish it on the website.

2015 Recap and What to Expect in 2016

How time really does FLY! Here were are in the very beginnings of 2016 and we are super excited to move into this amazing year. But before we hit the pedal to the floor and take off into 2016, lets take a look back at 2015.

We had a few marca releases this year, and here is a quick sum up of all of them.

Don Reynaldo Regalos: The original Don Reynaldo was released in December of 2014 to honor my dad and his support and introudction into the cigar world. The blend was based on his preference while I was growing up, he loves Habanos, so I vowed to blend something taking into consideration his two favorite marcas. Regalos, was released at the IPCPR in New Orleans and was a very successful blend. I was super excited to see it take off the way it did and so was "Reyanldo" as I showed him everything from launch until now and will continue to.

La Hacienda: "The Estate" is the 100% Aganorsa Nicaraguan puro that was a first for us, a price range of $7.50-$7.95 and available in 2 vitolas. This incredibly popular offering from Warped was conceptualized over dinner in NYC. The dish we were eating had 0 appeal in reading it as you never would figure the flavors would work together...well slap me I was wrong. Over dinner I said that I had to attempt to recreate this profile in a blend, and on my next trip to Nicaragua, La Hacienda was born.

Futuro: Ah Futuro, one of the most talked about new marca releases from Warped in 2015. A collaboration between myself and Max Fernandez of TABSA/Aganorsa, this project was a very organic method of coming to life and took over a year before it was completed. Having access to TABSA/Aganorsa's vault tobacco (material reserved for the family only), Max and I started to work on this project and wanted to achieve a blend that was different than anything Warped and Casa Fernandez has done up to this point. Available in 2 vitolas based off mine and Max's personal preference and it's just a blend you have to seek out and will see why.

Recap: I will keep it short and sweet. We had a great year and we couldn't have done it without our amazing family of retailers around the country and YOU! Thank you for making this year so amazing and I am humbled to see all of you enjoying the brand with the #warpedcigars hashtag! Keep those images coming, I love seeing everyone Get Warped!

Haven't tried any of these blends? Find the nearest Warped retailer to you and give them a try!

2016: What to Expect

So the questions of what Warped has planned for 2016 began at the 2015 IPCPR in New Orleans and now the 2016 IPCPR in Las Vegas is only about 7 months away, so lets get to it. The first thing everyone wants to know is "WHAT'S NEW?"...

I only have one (1) new release that will be available to all Warped retailers this year. It will debut at the IPCPR in Las Vegas in July.

I will spend this year concentrating on the quality and consistency of all of our lines to make sure your experience with Warped is the best it can possibly be.
